Sports bra saves hiker stranded in Alps

BERLIN, Germany (AP) — An American hiker stranded in the Bavarian Alps for nearly three days was rescued after using her sports bra as a signal, police in southern Germany said Monday.

Berchtesgaden police officer Lorenz Rasp said that he helped lift 24-year-old Jessica Bruinsma of Colorado to safety by helicopter on Thursday after she attracted the attention of lumberjacks by attaching her sports bra to a cable used to move timber down the mountain. “She’s a very smart girl, and she acted very resourcefully,” said Rasp. “She kept her shirt and jacket for warmth, but thought the sports bra could work as a signal.” Read the rest of this entry »

In the spirit of a true blog, I’m just going to ramble , and share a bit of my life:

Today, my wife (Shantel) and I celebrated our 9th anniversary. Every year we go see two or more movies on one day. It’s tradition. This year we went to Opry Mills 20. We hit up the TGI Friday’s (Jack Daniel’s Burger- excellent) and then on to the movies. On our way… we were acosted by mall kiosk workers.

You get the picture.

I felt like I was being targeted for a military offensive. I couldn’t go left or right, without someone trying to spray something on me or clean my wife’s jewelry. I saw some bald dude getting his scalp scraped by the giant spider head scratcher that totally freaks me out. It was oppressive. Read the rest of this entry »

US probes teen ‘pregnancy pact’

Gloucester High School
Gloucester High School has seen an alarming rise in pregnancies. Officials in the US state of Massachusetts are investigating how 17 teenage girls from the same school have become pregnant.  The number is four times as high as the year before at Gloucester High School. There are reports that some of the girls – none of whom is older than 16 – entered into a pact to have their babies together. The girls and their families have so far made no comment.

Officials are also investigating the ages of the fathers. Some are believed to be in their twenties and could face the possibility of being charged with having sex with minors. It is illegal to have sex with anyone younger than 16 in Massachusetts. Disturbing. Read the rest of this entry »

Make Believe. Not War.

June 13, 2008

If you’ll remember from a few months back, this was one of my top four to see at the movies this summer. Last night, I took my first trip to the historic Belcourt Theater(http://www.belcourt.org/venue). It was opened in 1925 for silent films, and somehow, has flourished as a hot spot for culture, and those “indie” films and documentaries that don’t show up at the Mega-plex.

I ended up dragging about seven guys, some of them, never having heard of the film. They were a bit suprised to only see Sylvester Stallone in small clips on VHS. Thankfully, the majority of them were glad they came. It was a unique movie experience and the film had a huge amount of heart. With the 80’s as a back drop, without giving too much away, it was a great movie about imagination, true friendship, and ………. Rambo. What more do you really need to know?

If you can’t find it at a Theater, rent it, and don’t forget your childhood either.

The movie definitely had “skills”.

New Music Tuesday- Jon Foreman

June 10, 2008

Maybe many of you are saying “Who?”

Jon Foreman is the frontman for the successful West Coast band Switchfoot. But this music is nothing like that. The best way I can describe it, openly intimate Derek Webb-esque. He has released 4 Eps each with about 6 songs, and seasonally titled. The lyrics are outstanding, and the musical arrangements are intriguing. If you dabble in folk at all, or if you just love a great song, please go buy these EPS.

“Summer” came out today.

There was one song in particular that I wanted to talk about. “Instead of a Show” is less than gentle in its assessment of the contemporary worship scene.

I snagged the lyrics and this video from http://snowjunkie.wordpress.com/2008/06/09/jon-foreman-instead-of-a-show/ . I’d love to hear what you think about this.

I hate all your show and pretense
The hypocrisy of your praise
The hypocrisy of your festivals
I hate all your show
Away with your noisy worship
Away with your noisy hymns
I stomp on my ears when you’re singing ‘em
I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show

Your eyes are closed when you’re praying
You sing right along with the band
You shine up your shoes for services
There’s blood on your hands
You turned your back on the homeless
And the ones that don’t fit in your plan
Quit playing religion games
There’s blood on your hands

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show
I hate all your show

Let’s argue this out
If your sins are blood red
Let’s argue this out
You’ll be one of the clouds
Let’s argue this out
Quit fooling around
Give love to the ones who can’t love at all
Give hope to the ones who got no hope at all
Stand up for the ones who can’t stand at all, all
I hate all your show
I hate all your show
I hate all your show
I hate all your show

Instead let there be a flood of justice
An endless procession of righteous living, living
Instead let there be a flood of justice
Instead of a show
I hate all your show

My other blog.

June 1, 2008

Okay, So, I’m sure most of you have heard me go on and on about my favorite band on the planet, Wild Sweet Orange. I have watched all of them grow up, and it has been great witnessing thier potential rise to public media attention.

They’ll be playing David Letterman in June, and Lollapalooza in August. Anyway, I felt it “necessary” to post my recent concert experience for the Refried Nation. Enjoy….

JW

This explains how I felt about last night’s performance:

Last night Garrett Kelly, Chip Kilpatrick, Preston Lovinggood, and Taylor Shaw came to Nashville. 300 or so white people gathered all around, more than likely for the gentle pop melodies of Augustana, but they were definitely welcomed to the show with as usual, and excellent live show.

Opening with the new single, Ten Dead Dogs, Preston in grey suit and black tie, sang with mild irony and shrugged shoulders through most of the song. Straight from there they went into a Dylan-esque version of “Wrestle with God”. It was great to see them play around, and equally refreshing to see that the road hasn’t worn them down.
